The United States and the Paris Climate Agreement – California Fights Back

President Trump recently made the decision to pull the United States from the Paris climate agreement stating “a reassertion of America’s sovereignty”, also adding that he was “elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris.” Trump informed the world that the United States will possibly reconsider the deal under more amicable terms or work to create “an entirely new transaction” but for them to be assured that these elements are barely a priority for him. Trump also stated: “If we can, great. If we can’t, that’s fine.”

The White House says that America will follow the exit process, which is quite lengthy, but it is clearly outlined in the deal. Though the US will still be a part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Trump informed media through a press conference that: “As of today, the United States will cease all implementation of the non-binding Paris accord.”

This statement includes any contribution to the UN Green Climate Fund. In an additional statement, the leaders of France, Italy and Germany replied to president Trump’s decision “with regret”, but also said the landmark Paris project agreement will not be renegotiated.

The question now is: What kind of efforts will the United States engage in, if any, to fight against climate change on its own American terms?

During President Trump’s campaign he made pledges to pull the United States out 2 agreements of former President Obama – Paris and Iran – which were centrepieces of his daily stump speech, he promised to end America’s involvement in each of those agreements regularly referring them as “terrible deals” made by “stupid” people.

On the other hand, the state of California has declared themselves “ready to fight” president Trump’s government administration over their rejection of the Paris agreement because it is “at odds with the survivability of our world”, informed Governor Jerry Brown to scientists.

While president Trump thinks that climate change is a very well prepared hoax perpetrated by China, the state of California sees the possibility of launching their very own satellite in order to monitor atmospheric changes. Governor Brown declares to resist with investigation under “honest science” without allowing any political issues to interfere with their goal, which is to tackle climate change – with the assistance of lawyers if needed.

Governor Brown is convinced we are facing many obstacles such as large financial structures and thousands of politicians who are creating impediments to the long-term survivability of our world. On the other hand, Erik Solheim who is involved in the United Nations Environment programme as an executive director has stated that some politicians, mostly Americans, have denied science.

Mr Solheim expressed that the data is out there, it is a reality and that they are aware of everything that is happening despite those who deny it. It is a fact that climate is rapidly changing the world, temperatures are increasing, habitat is paused because of stress, ocean waters have more acid in its components and that the world is facing a great deal of danger. There should be no space for misbelief in this.
